Jason Munro, the 302nd person I’ve met on my quest to have lunch with 500 strangers, has taken it upon himself to become a mental health leader.
Jason is the founder of a men’s group, called Dhirrabuu Walan, which gives men the opportunity to talk about their problems and discuss what’s going on in their lives.
This follows on from an Aboriginal tradition of people gathering in circles to tell stories and share traditional knowledge.
One of the things that inspired Jason to create Dhirrabuu Walan was because he experienced challenges with depression and anxiety when he was younger.
He would keep a lot of things bottled up inside, because of the belief a lot of men have that expressing emotions is unmanly.
Jason saw how harmful that approach was, both for himself and his friends, so now he’s doing his bit to bring about a positive change.
Jason is a proud Wiradjuri and Gomeroi man who draws a lot of strength from his culture. When he was young, he went off the rails, he says, in part because he drifted away from that culture. So he’s making a point to pass on his culture to his two young children.
The better people understand who they are, the more secure their mental health will be.
